A Highland Maltie is a cross between a Maltese and a West Highland White Terrier (Westie).
The Highland Maltie is gentle, loveable, playful, happy and makes a great family dog with a life expectancy of 13-26 years.

WE;FARE: The Highland Maltie is easy to train with persistence. This breed needs little exercise but they should have at least 1 walk a day.

BEHAVIOUR: The Highland Maltie is a lively and friendly dog. These dogs take on the temperament of both Westies and Maltese. They are lively, friendly and very self-assured. Most are very intelligent, which makes them easy to train. These dogs are spunky and they need at-least one daily walk. This will combat behaviour problems such as compulsive digging, as most terriers love this activity.
They are great travel dogs and make an excellent watchdog. Highland Maltie puppies and dogs get along with most strangers, children and other dogs. Most people find them to have  very lively and robust personality.

APPEARANCE: The coat of the Highland Maltie is white. The coat is long and wavy. The Highland Maltie has a soft coat with an undercoat like the Westie. Since both the West Highland White Terrier and the Maltese are white, this hybrid dog is also always white. Their straight coat may be rough and they may also have an undercoat like most West Highland White Terriers have. Their hair grows continuously like human hair. Therefore, they need consistent grooming by either brushing regularly or keeping a short puppy cut. These dogs are also non-shedding and most are hypoallergenic. Full grown Highland Malties can weigh anywhere from 11-16 lbs.
Muzzle: Their muzzle is short and strong.
Legs: Their legs are short and white, agile and strong for their size.
Tail: Their tail is curled around and fluffed out, it wags rapidly.
Eyes: Their eyes are slightly on the side of their head. They have dark brown eyes with great vision.
Ears: Their ears are flopped down set well on the side of their head.

MAINTENANCE: The Highland Maltie is a non-shedding dog. The coat should be brushed regularly. Bathe as needed. The ears need to be cleaned regularly.

DIET: The Highland Maltie can be a picky eater. They need a balanced diet with a variety of different foods including bones to help strengthen the teeth.

BREEDING CHARACTERISTICS: Most female dogs have their first oestrus cycle between 6 and 12 months. Females experience oestrus cycles biannually, during which her body prepares for pregnancy, and at the peak she will come into oestrus, during which time she will be mentally and physicaly receptive to copulation. Dogs bears their litters roughly 56 to 72 days after fertilisation, although the length of gestation can vary. An average litter consists o about 3 puppies.

HEALTH: The Highland Maltie has no known allergies at this time.

HOUSING AND ENVIRONMENT: The Highland Maltie is pretty adaptable to any weather condition. They make a great dog for an apartment or house because they are small and efficient.

HISTORY: Like most hybrid dogs, the Highland Maltie was bred to bring out the best of both breeds.
