Papillons are intelligent and adorable breeds of dog. Their name means butterfly in French because of their fanned out ears, symmetrical face and graceful figure.

WELFARE: Papillons are energetic and usually social. They only need 1 walk per day. But will be happy to have more. Never leave them alone for more than a few hours especially whilst young. They aren't very destructive, but they should never be let to wonder around outside unattended. 

BEHAVIOUR: They are energetic and loving but can get snappy and bark a lot if not trained otherwise. They are always excited, territorial and loving. 

APPEARANCE: The majority of the papillon is usually white but their ears never are. They can come in a range of colours; gold and white, black  and white, tan and white and the majority of them are black, white and tan. They are small, dainty and delicate. They are known for their magnificent ears. They are beautiful and fluffy, their hair grows as they age, especially on their ears and tail.

COAT: Their coat is incredibly soft and multicoloured.

EARS: Their ears are erect and fanned out. They are soft, large and have great hearing.

EYES: Their eyes are small and dark, they have brilliant eyesight.

LEGS: Their legs are small and skinny but they can withstand a lot of exercise.

MUZZLE: They have a short snout which is lightly fuzzed.

TAIL: Their tail is small, curled and fluffed.

MAINTENANCE: Their hair should be brushed daily and their ears cleaned regularly. They should be brushed more thoroughly the older they get.

DIET: Papillons need a balanced diet filled with vitamins and minerals. They, like all dogs, should not eat anything other than dog food. They should have bones to help strengthen their teeth. They always need to have plenty of water all the time.

BREEDING CHARACTERISTICS: Most female dogs have their first oestrous cycle (heat) between 6 and 12 months. Females experience oestrous cycles biannually, during which her body prepares for pregnancy, and at the peak she will come into oestrous, during which time she will be manually and physically receptive to copulation. Dogs bear their litters roughly 56 to 72 days after fertilisation, although the length of gestation can vary. An average litter consists of about 3 puppies. 

HEALTH: They can easily get ear infections. They have delicate eyes so always be careful and make sure they don't have any swelling or crusting.

HOUSING AND ENVIRONMENT: Papillons are small and good for a house. They are a good size for apartments but they might bark. They are great inside dogs and can not live outside due to their constant attention-seeking.

ORIGIN: They originated in France and were originally bred just for show.
